If youโre in your 20s or 30s and want to take the best care of your skin, you probably already know how important it is to cleanse your face regularly. But itโs not as simple as it sounds: knowing how to properly wash your face is key to getting the most out of your skin care routine. Here, in our second Skin Care 101 blogpost, weโll guide you through the basics of face washing and provide some tips on how to best protect your skinโs health.
Before we dive into facial cleansing, hereโs an overview of everything weโll go over in this blogpost:
- How to figure our your skin type
- How to find a good cleanser
- How to correctly cleanse your face
- How to correctly dry your face
- Applying your skin care
Why cleanse?
We cleanse to get rid of all the impurities we accumulate throughout the day.
Our skin goes through a lot. Every. Single. Day! it faces a ton of sun damage, pollution exposureโฆ Therefore it is essential to get rid of all that dirt so we can hydrate it.
Weโll now be learning how to correctly cleanse the face, step-by-step.
And for those of you thinking โthis seems really simpleโ Iโm sure thereโs a lot of people who donโt know how to do it the right way.
1. How to figure out your skin type
Knowing your skin type is important to determine what type of cleanser to use. If you donโt know your skin type, you can check this post.
2. How to find a good cleanser
Now, I know that if you go to the drugstore there are hundreds of different cleansers to choose from. So, Iโm going to recommend my personal favorites.
If you have combination to oily skin, itโs no secret that the youth to the People โ kale and green tea spinach cleanser is a banger. It does a good job of getting all the dirt and grime out of your skin without leaving a dry and tight feeling afterwards.

If you have more dry skin, then I recommend the Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser from Krave beauty. Itโs so good! Itโs very similar to the previous cleanser, but delivers more hydration and is more gentle on the skin which makes ideal for people with dry skin.
And if you donโt like online shopping and you want one that you can find at the drugstore, I recommend the simple micelle a gel wash. Itโs affordable, doesnโt overly strip your skin and is just a great cleanser for all skin types, especially normal skin.

If you want to find your own cleansers I have two recommendations:
- Look at the ingredient list. if the second third or fourth ingredient is sodium lauryl sulfate then I recommend do not use that cleanser because that is an ingredient that can overly strip or damage your skin and we do not want that as part of our skin care.
- If you find a cleanser that has a scrub in it or is any type of polish (or is a three-in-one facial wash) avoid it at all cost.
If you want an effective and safe way to attain smooth skin and get rid of all those dead, flakey skin cells then please do not use the scrub and wait for our next post about exfoliation.
3. How to correctly cleanse your face
First, wet your face. Then take a dime-sized amount of cleanser and lather it between your palms to foam it up. Gently apply it to your skin.

Now comes the good stuff.
I personally recommend cleansing for about 45 seconds to one full minute. If you do any less then it may not clean your skin deeply enough, if you do longer then you risk overly stripping your skin moisture and hydration.
I cannot stress this enough:Make sure not to press too hard into your skin. Rubbing your face violently and causing any type of discomfort or pain are big no-nos. It should be a very gentle process.
After youโre done, rinse off completely and dry your face with a clean towel. If you have acne prone skin I highly recommend always using clean towels and clean pillowcases in order to prevent bacteria buildup. And if you wanna give some extra love to your skin you can use a silk pillowcase. you want to know why, you can check our last post on the benefits of silk pillowcases.
4. How to correctly dry your face
Make sure you donโt wait too long before applying the rest of your skin care.

Itโs easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and forget to put on your skin care for a good 30 minutes.
By that point your skin is already overly stripped and dry (or is already producing oil) because it doesnโt sense any type of hydration on the face.
I personally donโt wait more than 10 minutes before applying my skin care.
5. Applying your skin care
