One minute you’re 15 years old, staring into the mirror, examining each little blemish and the next? You’re 25, wondering where the sunspot on your nose came from, or making various facial expressions, to see if that line on the side of your eye is actually a wrinkle !!! So how can you avoid aging in your 20’s?
Technically, as a young 20-something, you’re in the heyday of your youth, you can still get away with 4 hours of sleep without it being written all over your face! So why should you be mindful of reducing signs of aging?!
Wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process. With age, our skin gets thinner, drier and we lose elastin. The ability for our skin to protect itself is reduced as we age. Eventually, wrinkles, creases and lines form on our skin.
It’s not all bad news though! The key to preventing wrinkles is all about starting early. So, what exactly should you be doing?
Well, here’s your anti-wrinkle checklist. you can get your’s right now.
1. Do not break the Golden skincare rule
No matter how tired you are after that long day of work and a night out with friends, never break the golden rule. You know what we’re talking about: You must take off your make-up and cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin before going to sleep.
A clean skin is the foundation of a good skin routine
Cleansing is important for removing dirt, sweat, pathogens (like bacteria and viruses), make up, excess oil, and other debris from the skin. It also promote the exfoliation of dead skin cells and prepares our skin for the application of other products to support a healthy appearance.
Don’t exercise with makeup on. Exercising while wearing makeup on a regular basis clogs your pores.
For my oily skin I love using:
2. What is my skin type?
Knowing what type of skin you have is very important. Skincare is personal, if you don’t know your skin type you may be using the wrong products for your skin. So you must identify your skin type to customize your skin routine according to your goals.
3. Wear sunscreen 365 days a year – rain or shine!
Sunscreen is the number one way of preventing aging of young skin. You must use sunscreen every single day of the year, not just when it’s sunny. Find the right one for your skin type and slather some on every morning making sure to re-apply every two hours, specially when out.
Use your Sunscreen every day !!
Here are some of our favorite sunscreens:
And of course make sure you are covering every bit of exposed skin, including your ears, neck, chest and even your hairline.
4. Do not over exfoliate !!
Exfoliation is great, it gives you nice smooth skin (the perfect base for makeup). But don’t over-do-it. When you are in your 20s you have an amazing and strong skin barrier, don’t mess it up with too many acids and scrubs. Basically, you should exfoliate just enough to avoid dry flaky skin.
5. Go easy on anti-aging products
It might sound counterintuitive, but many anti-aging products have potent ingredients that increase the metabolism of skin cells making them too active for younger skin. Instead, streamline your routine to a few skincare products such as a gentle cleanser, moisturizer and protective sunscreen. You may start slowly integrating anti-aging product when you hit 25.
6. Follow a healthy diet
Like the old adage goes: what you eat shows on your face. Unhealthy diets that are high in sugar and salt will naturally accelerate the aging process. On the other hand, foods that are rich in antioxidants like leafy green vegetables, fruits, avocados, berries and salmon fight aging inside out minimizing cell damage.
7. Stay hydrated
Not to sound like a broken record, but hydration is key to solving almost every skin issue. If you’re bad at drinking from the bottle, download one of the many apps that recommend the right amount of water for your body weight and remind you to drink up on an hourly basis.
